October 2011 Newsletter

Dear all,                                                                                                           27 October 2011

Betty would like to remind us that the first two weeks in November are supposed to be Quarter Peal fortnight, we tend to remember it when it is all over!!!  Please contact your ringing master to let them know what you would like to try, perhaps a first inside or first in a method or if you want to call something or just to ring a favourite method – they will be able to find a band to support you.  Contact details are all below.

-o0o-

Here are details of the quarterly meeting in November, followed by the normal practices and write-ups from around the district:

Saturday 5 November – Quarterly meeting: Norfolk

10.00 - 11.00               Mundford                   6          6-0-3                TL800938        IP26 5DN

Very limited parking near the church, try roadside or village hall.  There are no toilets in the church but a lady, who lives nearby, said we could use her outside loo.  It is their "Gift Days" weekend and there will be Christmas Cards designed by the children of the village school to view and vote for your favourite ones.  Tea and coffee will be provided.

11.30 - 12.30               Northwold                  8          14-3-20            TL756970        IP26 5NE

Toilet in church.  Followed by short business meeting but there is a wedding at 2.30 and there may be some hustle and bustle going on, so it will be important to be brief.

Lunch:  There are pubs at Northwold and Methwold but the recommendation is for the Crown Inn at Northwold.  The Landlady would like to know numbers in advance, so important to let Betty know (see contact details below) if you want to book lunch.

2.30 - 3.30                   Methwold                   8          12-1-22            TL732949        IP26 4PQ

Toilet in church.  Parking on roadside or at the rear of the village hall which is opposite the George Pub.

Ringing Master: Betty Baines (01379 643293, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ) Wednesday 14 September: Stow Bardolph, Norfolk.  About a dozen members had travelled out to my neck of the woods - it felt quite strange not to have to set off early and to be able to leave the dogs at home. Stow Bardolph have eight good bells and it would have been lovely to have some more ‘more experienced’ ringers to enable us to extend our repertoire. However, those who were there made the most of it. Although Stow Bardolph doesn’t have its own band, we had been made most welcome and the bells were ready for us. A combined effort ensured refreshments were there, with Delia’s lovely cake. Everyone who knows me knows that I don’t cook! We rang Plain Bob Doubles, call changes, Little Bob Minor, Plain Bob Triples, Reverse Canterbury PB Doubles, Grandsire, St Nicholas and Stedman Doubles. We were pleased to welcome someone new and one or two people we hadn’t seen for some time.  After ringing, some went for lunch, and then to the gardens at Stow Hall. Some of us then went on to the Rare Breeds Centre afterwards.  It was lovely to have a meeting ‘at home’, so I hope the Guild comes up to this area again. After all, it was at a meeting in this area that I joined and I haven’t regretted it. There are other ‘ladies’ in this area who might be persuaded! West Norfolk towers are quite spread out, but sometimes just one more experienced ringer would make such a difference. (PW)  Thursday 29 September: Bressingham, Norfolk.  Several of us initially met at the cafe at Bloom’s Garden Centre due to a lack of facilities at the church.  It all felt like first day back at school following the hols – which indeed it was for many of us felt rusty to say the least!  We attempted a variety of methods to suit our various levels of knowledge, all of us resolving to do better this term and to make more progress!  We raised and lowered in peal and rang Grandsire Doubles, call changes, Plain Bob Doubles, St Simon’s, Treble Bob Hunt, Cambridge S Minor, Stedman Doubles and Plain Hunt on 5 and 6.  As no one has come forward to claim the magnificent prize offered in our last write-up, it will be donated to a suitable charity – probably to those who went astray (AMP)

Saturday 12 November

Thursday 24 November

10.30 - 12.30               Woodton                    6          7-2-4                TM285946       NR35 2NB

Lynda Lee has sent an update on Carla Broderick’s progress: The doctors are pleased with her progress and her voice is beginning to return, but she still cannot swallow solids and gets very tired. Lynda says that although she has not managed to see Carla yet, she will drop another card through her door when next passing.

Best wishes,

September 2011 Newsletter

Dear all,                                                                                                           24 September 2011

A reminder that I will be placing an order with Hilary Aslett for centenary shirts on 1 October, so if you would like to add your order to this, it will save you a £5 surcharge which is otherwise incurred if you are ordering less than five garments.  All garments are only in navy with the logo on the left breast: please note that each is separately ordered for you and cannot be replaced.  Prices include VAT and p+p:

T shirt £13.00             Polo shirt £20.00            Sweatshirt £24.00                      Rugby shirt £30.00

Hilary has sent me this additional information to help you choose your size: “XS:34/36; S: 36/38; M: 38/40; L: 40/42; XL: 42/44; XXL: 44/46.  These are a bit on the generous side but allow for ‘ringablility’ – give enough room to stretch up and loose enough for comfort – also don’t create a midriff gap!  I am about 44, L is roomy and M just a little snug!”  If you are interested in buying a shirt, please let me have your order by phone or email (see end of newsletter) and a cheque made payable to ‘Hilary Aslett’ by Friday 30 September 2011.

Ringing Masters: Wendy Godden (01245 223873, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ) and Jackie Latham (01223 890898, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ) 5 August Pebmarsh, Essex. Whilst we could get into the church (and make coffee) we had a lock-out as far as the Ringing Chamber was concerned. Linda Bullough made phone calls whilst the rest of us looked in all the likely places ringers hide keys. We didn’t find it, so drank coffee and ate biscuits instead. Linda was still trying to get hold of a keyholder, when a church member came into the church and miracle of miracles, he knew where the key was. We’d missed it by about 10 centimetres! We’d lost 40 minutes of our Practice time by then but managed to more or less make it up.  We rang: Plain Bob Doubles, Grandsire Doubles, Stedman Doubles, Primrose S Minor and Kent TB Minor.  Marika trebled to Plain Bob and Grandsire a couple of times, but mostly wanted to stand behind the treble and watch, so she could learn to count her place rather than rely on numbers. She benefitted from this very valuable exercise and was pleased. Our much appreciated refreshments were supplied by Linda and Charmane. Linda had only returned from holiday in France the night before and had brought the milk and biscuits with her! Delicieuse! (WG)          20 August Gosfield, Essex. We had a good practice, thirteen ringers in all and a good spread of methods rung.  As Wendy was on holiday Jackie ran the practice on her behalf. After a little trepidation at the apparently long draft bells, everyone agreed that they were actually a lovely ring.  Linda and Charmane provided excellent refreshments even without the luxury of a kitchen.  We welcomed another Cambridgeshire ringer, Julie Boagey from Duxford, and hope we see her again on a regular basis.  We rang: Rounds and call changes, Grandsire - touch, Double Oxford Bob Minor, St Clements CM Minor - touch, Kent TB Minor - touch, Ipswich S Minor, Cambridge S Minor - bob course. (JL)  17 September Fulbourn, Cambs. The training morning at Fulbourn was attended by ten ladies. As the numbers were not brilliant we sadly didn't really do justice to this very nice ring of eight, but we did manage the following: Plain hunt doubles, triples and major, Reverse Canterbury PBD – touch, Kent TB Minor, Oxford TB Minor, Single Oxford Bob Minor – touch, Grandsire triples – touch, Cambridge S Minor – bob course, Stedman triples.  Anne Judd and Sandra Webb deserve special mention as I felt they made excellent progress and performed some very nice ringing.  Cakes made by Pam were delicious [especially the coffee ring! – Ed] (JL)

Norfolk & Suffolk

Ringing Master: Betty Baines (01379 643293, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ). 13 August Blythburgh, Suffolk.  It rained so hard that we could hardly see Blythburgh through the mist, but what an amazing church in which to be able to ring.  Thanks to Peggy Meredith for her hospitality.  With so many holiday and wedding commitments our numbers were down but that led to more rope time.  Welcome back to Teresa Colthorpe after her recent house move and to Graham who joined us for some of the morning.  We rang Grandsire Doubles; rounds and call changes, Plain Bob Minor; Plain Bob Doubles, Reverse St Bartholomew’s Doubles and down in peal. (AMP)  25 August Sproughton, Suffolk.  Two of us arrived at the church, set up the coffee, biscuits, calendars and a ton of apples to give away but when after 15 mins no one else appeared we checked the notice board to find we were at Bramford and not Sproughton!  A senior moment I think, but, fortified by the laughter we received from those who did go to the right tower, together with the delicious refreshments (much needed by that time so thanks to Rose and Daphne), we enjoyed several doubles methods until the six rope began to fray.  After ringing five and then a quick repair by a local ringer we went on to complete Grandsire Doubles, Stedman Doubles; Cambridge S Minor; Reverse Canterbury PBD, St Martin’s B Doubles, Treble Bob Hunt and down in peal.  There will be a small prize for anyone guessing who had that senior moment - Sproughton attendees excluded! (AMP)

Please note another re-arranged date for a practice in Suffolk this month.
